Early Train to Santa Barbara

On my way to my favorite getaway city — and avoiding both holiday and Neverland traffic. I’m finally beginning to leverage my PDA, having had the sense to both load up SB in Google Maps and download a list of movie showtimes as well, before I left. Then too, I suffered a brief bout of Kindle-envy before I remembered that I have book-reading software on the PDA as well. So, I’m set with music, books, and destination info with minimal paper, and can write if I choose without having to lug a laptop along. We’ve just passed the notorious Chatsworth crash site and are in the tunnels to Simi Valley. I’ll hit “send” when we emerge.

Yes, folks, it’s a Palm Lifedrive with Universal IR Keyboard, and it’s still in use . The combo is lighter than a laptop and allows for touch typing; it’s taken me through filmmaking classes and four attempts at Nanowrimo. My desktop Mac broke down a few weeks ago, and I promptly came down with an attack of fantasies of a new desktop or laptop Mac, maybe with an iPhone or the new Palm Pre (Palm loyalty dies hard), but an examination of the (lack of) SilverFinances convinced me that making do with what I’ve got would be a better plan…

So I bought the old Mac a new(er) power supply, and I’ve been updating all the software for the little devil below. Adding bluetooth capability and SD cards is cheap these days, so it’s doing better than ever before at being a substitute laptop/iPod — the poor thing just isn’t the latest kewl hardware tho…

Back in the Saddle Again

Transferring my old posts to this site has brought home how very much my attitude and outlook on life have changed in the last five years — and not for the better, I fear. My cheerful enthusiasm for filmmaking and casual disregard of what I needed to do to keep my job and my family together has been replaced by an ever-present dread of job loss and fear of interacting with people.

Some of this is good. I’ve re-learned thrift, a concept I’d mastered as an undergraduate, but misplaced somewhere. I’ve learned not to take relationships for granted, and a great deal about how to get along with folks. Nonetheless, much of my life right now is dominated by fear of people and of financial insecurity.

I really need to get to more recovery meetings.

Scotland vacation

Yes, I went on a Real Vacation. In Scotland. For an entire week.

It was one of those see 6 locations in 7 days sort of vacations where you (or at least, I) don’t get to explore nearly as much as might be desirable. Still, I bought a new camera for the occasion and learned how to take really good pictures from moving buses and trains…

Things I miss about iBlog:

Embedding anything I darn please. WordPress won’t let you embed Flash, scripts or iFrames.
Advertising. Not that I ever made more than a dime or two off it, but I liked to dream.

Things that I really like about WordPress:

It’s easier than iBlog.
It’s web-based so I can blog almost anywhere.
It will take emails and make blog entries out of them…

Maybe I will go to the hosted version of WordPress, and get back my ads…

Or not. One thing I will not do is use iWeb to blog. Apple just doesn’t get blogging…

The Hubby took me to a minor league baseball game Friday night, Lancaster Jethawks at Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. It was like walking into the movie- the clowning mascots (supposedly chupacabras), the wild pitcher, the grim veterans. I almost expected Kevin Costner to come out and catch…
